I Became the Hero Who Banished the Protagonist chapter 41

41. Skirmish (3)

41. Skirmish (3)

“… Have you fainted again?”

I opened my eyes in the storage room, which is now more familiar than my bedroom. As always, crowns of thorns were scattered on the floor, and the sunlight, which turned into the pure white light of the morning, was seeping in through the blackout curtains. I carefully picked up the crown with a lethargic hand and placed it in the wooden box.

“[Is your body okay? This is the first time I’ve seen him stay up all night tied to that pillar.]”

I untied the rope skillfully and shook my head.

“no. not okay My body is so sore from sleeping with my body tied to a pole. I think I should do some stretching today and go to sleep in the right position.”

As I straightened my bent knees and twisted my body around, my bones patted and screamed. Well, it got better after running some mana, wearing a holy sword, and circling the parade ground a few times. It was fortunate that the holy sword could restore my body to some extent.

“[I’m not going to tell you not to overdo it. But, don’t kill yourself. Illroi, you know very well where that line is.]”

“… yes. thanks.”

After rejuvenating my body to some extent, I looked at the clock hanging on the wall of the storage room. It was disgusting that even though I fell asleep in such an uncomfortable position, my body woke up exactly at five o’clock. Is this the power of that habit?

After tidying up the ropes, I took the wooden box and left the warehouse. It was not yet time for people to wake up and be active, so except for the people who worked from the wee hours of the morning, the entire Evernode was completely immersed in silence. In order not to be noticed by anyone, I carefully headed for the outbuilding where the warrior party was staying. I heard Georg, who wakes up as early as me, running on the playground near the outbuilding. diligent guy.

Upon entering the annex, I could see Marianne sitting still, seemingly lost in contemplation. Marianne must have sensed my presence as well, so she opened her closed eyes and looked at me. I put the wooden box on one of the tables and approached her before Marianne’s eyes completely captured me.

“Are you awake?”

“Yes. Because it snowed early. It was an ambiguous time to go back to sleep, so I was meditating for a while.”

Marianne always had the same expression. Unless it’s the expression that sometimes changes when you’re really surprised, it means that you’re always expressionless. It wasn’t that I didn’t mind that fact, but I didn’t bother mentioning it because I was determined to watch her more over time.

“What did the hero do so early?”

Even though I called Illroy, Marianne was still calling me a hero. I thought this was her own stubbornness.

“I usually get up around this time. On the way back from a short walk just now. Georg was running in full swing outside, did you see him?”

“Yes. He asked me where the hero went, and I replied that I hadn’t seen him either.”

“… I see I’ll have to tell Georg later.”

I sat across from Marianne and stretched out. I still have time before I go out on patrol, so I’ll have to hang out here for a while and then go wash up.

“Shall I serve the tea?”

Marianne looked at me and asked. Tea is originally in charge of Daphne. I blinked my eyes, then finally nodded my head, wanting to dispel the cold that seeped into my body while I was sleeping. With my permission, Marianne got up diligently and walked over to the simple kitchen.

“[You have more room than you think.]”

The holy sword spoke in a sharp voice. I worked hard all night, please look at this much. After chatting with Holy Sword for a while, Marianne quickly returned with steaming hot tea and biscuits.

“thanks.”

“It is my job.”

Marianne replied casually and sat down where she was sitting, holding the cup with both hands. I was quietly sipping tea, and suddenly I saw Marianne and asked.

“Are you nervous or afraid?”

Marianne tilted her head. It seemed to ask what to be nervous and afraid of.

“War. The fourth plague to come.”

“I am a member of the Puritan Church. You cannot fear enemies of God you have not seen.”

Marianne said that and shook her head from side to side.

“I just follow the hero and defeat the enemy.”

“… Do you trust me?”

“I’m just following orders.”

Marianne nodded and said that. Seeing that hesitation, I couldn’t help but smile bitterly. Marianne sipped tea with me, staring blankly at my smile.

“I will increase the patrol team.”

The Archduke of Quenore declared that before going out on this patrol. It seems that the intention is to look around as closely as possible in the widest possible range.

“Increased from 3 patrols to 5. Close the gap between each patrol unit and set up a middle ground so that they can closely check each other’s safety. … And,”

The Archduke turned his head towards our party.

“This time, Illroy, I’m trying to include one in each patrol instead of tying your party together, is that okay?”

Rather than concentrating all forces on one, are they trying to prepare for the unexpected by distributing them evenly among the patrols? I turned to Georg and tried to ask his opinion.

“… Why are you asking my opinion on this?”

Georg raised his eyebrows in surprise.

“I am in favor. Now that we’ve had enough patrol experience, there’s no reason for us to be together. It would be better to increase the average strength by assigning one member to each patrol.”

The Archduke of Quenore cleared his throat and distributed the number of people. The Archduke himself was assigned to patrol 1, I was assigned to patrol 2, Georg, Marianne, and Daphne were assigned to patrol 3, 4, and 5 in that order.

“This patrol not only checks the risk factors in the area, but also has the purpose of checking how the monsters will form a front line and where the vulnerable areas are in the defense battle.”

The power of the words of the Grand Duke of Quenore seemed to have magical powers that boosted the morale of the knights and soldiers. He didn’t say much and was just calmly explaining the outline of the operation, but the concentration and momentum of the soldiers were noticeably rising. Or maybe the fact that he was together had an impact. Actually, I was also getting a little lifted by the grand duke’s words.

“And, as of today, Evernode enters into an exhibition system. Reinforce the troops on the entire wall, inspect equipment, and perform repairs.”

The Grand Duke of Quenore declared that and turned his head toward the outer wall, which he sees a lot these days. The gate was lifted with a rattle. Now, with the chill coming from outside, the spirit of the Evernode soldiers was not pushed back.

“Come on, let’s go. Today’s patrol is patrol, but it is reconnaissance, and it is the beginning of information warfare.”

I watched our party parting ways in an unusual way, then I gripped the reins and rode my horse forward. Today, I alone have to lead the soldiers of patrol 2.

“If there is anything out of the ordinary, please let me know without delay. We will advance at a slower pace than usual.”

“Do whatever the hero wants!”

“No matter how good the hero is these days, we are all good enough to keep pace with the hero!”

The soldiers of the north who shout confidently and courageously. I smiled at them and lightly poked the horse in the side.

The patrol moved differently than usual. I took a closer look at the terrain that I knew only by feeling, and if there was anything that stood out, I recorded it. The forest was not as quiet as usual, but noisy. I thought it was because there were so many patrols in the forest at once, but this time it didn’t seem like we were the only guests.

“Captured Raven ahead. They are running around frantically.”

“Troll caught at 40 paces to 2 o’clock. I will go and finish it quickly.”

“At 11 o’clock. pack of white wolves. There are quite a few of them, so let’s change course and subdue them.”

There were many monsters. Quite a lot. My enhanced senses were constantly catching monsters. I couldn’t move to defeat the monsters one by one, so I only roughly grasped the location of the monsters and proceeded to the ‘Eye of the North’, subduing only the monsters that overlapped with the course of the patrol.

“… I remember that there haven’t been many monsters lately, but why are there so many of them today?”

A knight asked me. I looked down at the leader of the pack of white wolves, who lay decapitated at his feet and frowned.

“It means that the limit line is very close, or that the monsters, like us, have sent troops for an outpost. You won’t be able to guess until you check it out.”

At my words, the knight’s face hardened.

“… Either way, you have to be vigilant. Maybe the lake is starting to freeze. What should I do?”

“I will speed it up a little. If the limit line is closer than we thought, we may be in a more dangerous situation than we thought. If the other patrols realized that fact, they’d make their way to the lake as quickly as we did, so you’d better hurry.”

I stabbed the horse’s side with my heel again. The horse started to move again at my urging.

“[…] It doesn’t feel too good. Stay alert.]”

Even the Holy Sword, which tends to be quiet while I am on duty, said so. I began spinning while drawing mana from my heart little by little beforehand. The end of the forest was rapidly approaching. I hurriedly slashed off the monsters blocking my way. The chill gets stronger. I can’t even see the lake yet, but my breath is starting to come out of my mouth.

“… Warrior.”

I nodded at the sound I heard next to me and increased my speed. The light and the view blocked by the forest began to open little by little. After passing through the last tree, I was at a loss for words as soon as I reached the northern snow.

“Damn it.”

The blue lake is frozen. It was a fact that could be known without going out and checking. Cracks formed by freezing on the surface of the white ice-covered water surface were scattered. I raised my gaze from the lake to the ridge on the other side.

“It’s right in front of you.”

The knight’s voice hardened. In his words, the limit line had already crossed the mountain and lurked in front of the lake. The sky is hazy. The whole body of the mountain was covered with snow and turned pure white.

And, I could feel it very distinctly. The terrible beings who lurk beyond the pure white curtain that is firmly drawn like that border. And beyond those terrible beings, a terrifyingly gigantic being watching us silently.

“… When the patrols gather here, they must come together and not separate.”

I said looking at the forest. The limit line was approaching much faster than the Archduke and I expected. Please, we should reach this lake safely. While I was grinding my teeth, someone appeared with the sound of breaking through the bushes.

“… Damn it.”

First of all, it wasn’t a creature that looked like a human. And, it wasn’t even an ordinary monster. What emerged from the bushes was a f*cking huge white wolf. Undoubtedly, releasing a lot of monsters was to distract my senses.

“You pitiful humans who took care of themselves and walked into the wolf’s mouth.”

The wolf growled, and so ‘said.’

“I will make an aperitif with your blood before his great stride.”

The rustle behind the wolf’s back grew louder. White wolves, dozens of white wolves appeared one by one. I clenched my teeth and pulled out the holy sword. The knights and soldiers behind me also pulled out their swords one by one.

“… Roy. A signal flare.”

At my words, the knight, Roy, took out a signal flare, but soon froze. I, too, followed Roy’s gaze and looked at the sky, then let out a quiet voice.

wheein.

pop. pop. pop.

Above the clear summer sky, flares calling for help were being fired at the same time.

“Give up hope. Put down the knife.”

The wolf spoke, using the sound of the flare as the background sound.

“Be gentle, be our sacrifice.”

  1. I’m really enjoying the buildup for the 4th Calamity. Most of these isekai novels focus too much on power fantasy and forget to build proper tension.
