I Became the Hero Who Banished the Protagonist chapter 47

47. warrior (1)

Two weeks have passed since the saintess and mercenaries arrived at the temporary village. No progress was seen in recovery. It would be easier to think of Baktins as a city that never existed. Reconstruction of the port has not yet entered the foundation stage. They had to clean up the ruins of the collapsed city and build a new city, but it took a long time to clean up the ruins of Baktins even with the mobilization of magicians.

Isis was in charge of treating the villagers. Like the ruins of Baktins, patients continued to come out of nowhere. If you heal one person, another person dies. The wound was infested with germs, and the hot air rotted the wound.

“Saint… Please save me, saintess… .”

A boy groaned as he thrust in his severed arm. It was the twentieth patient of the day. The mother who brought the boy was limping with a bandage on her leg. Isis poured her mana. If there is no amputated arm, the amputated arm cannot be healed. It was impossible to grow new arms. The only thing Isis could do was to calm the boy’s complaints of pain.

“Help me… .”

No matter how much mana he poured, the boy suffered. The saintess’ mana was being cut away. Poured most of the remaining mana. Isis even treated her mother’s legs in a cold sweat. The broken leg slowly healed and returned to its place.

“thank you.”

However, the look on her face was only concerned about her son, not caring about the fact that her leg had healed. Isis watched the hat as it left the tent for the makeshift ward. Through the fluttering tents came the murmur of people.

“Keep your magic intact, saintess.”

The soldier who was helping the treatment next to him said. Isis shook her head. While forcibly raising mana and trying to call someone else, the pick fell forward. Next, waiting for the saintess in front of the tent was a patient with half of her face covered in bandages. A soldier who was controlling the people coming and going in front of the tent blocked the patient from entering. Through the gap in the tent, the patient’s remaining eye gazed earnestly at the saintess.

“Let me in.”

“No, saintess. If you get sick like this, you won’t be able to save more people who are waiting for the saintess. Wouldn’t it be okay for that person to receive treatment tomorrow?”

The soldier spoke in a stern voice, but Isis persisted.

“Let it in… .”

“Are you not going to take care of your body, Isis?”

Arjen grabbed Isis, who was about to fall from behind. Isis tried to shake off that hand, but her body wouldn’t listen. Isis staggered and sat down in her seat.

“Stop today. The sun is already setting.”

“It can’t be… do not have.”

“Stop being stubborn, Isis. Your body won’t stand it.”

Arjen lifted Isis, who had no strength to even control her body, and moved her to the bed. The priests each sighed as they looked at it.

“I really did not know that the aftermath of the disaster would be this severe. I didn’t mean to destroy the world for nothing.”

“It’s only this much after landing for a while, but what would have happened if we had continued our advance beyond Baktins?”

The muffled sound of the priests discussing. Isis couldn’t help but recall the memory of that day.

‘If you want to kill everyone in Baktins, do it.’

At that time, the words were too far away. At that time, the saintess crossed the line of death for the first time and passed her own death. My death was near, and the death of others seemed distant. The warrior who went to the front in search of death was irresponsible and had no plans, and the mercenary who sought our lives through the death of the enemy was rational and strong.

Shut up. ugh Be patient even if it hurts. must be disinfected. Don’t die, wake up.

The screams and moans never ceased. When I closed my eyes, the sound became clearer. The smell of a festering, rotting wound under the summer sun is stronger than the smell of medicine.

what am i What is the saintess and her sense of mission? what did we do wrong then? Why did the bishop look at me as if reprimanding me then? Am I regretting the choice I made that day?

Isis clenched her fists and caught her fading consciousness. Urgent footsteps were heard. Opening the tent, a sweaty soldier jumped in.

“What’s going on?”

The priest who was sitting with him in the hospital room greeted the soldier. The soldier gasped for breath and continued talking.

“The fourth plague is coming. The army is said to be larger than expected. To the extent that Archduke Strop of Evernode urgently sent a request for assistance to the capital… but,”

It is said that the forces of Evernode, including the warriors, will not retreat.

The soldier’s words rang in Isis’ head.

On the night of the day when the limit line approached and the silhouette of a giant began to be seen beyond the curtain, the Archduke of Quenore called a senior meeting. Torches and lanterns were now needed in conference rooms. The archduke’s expression in the swaying and lengthening shadow was deeper than at night.

“The fourth plague is coming.”

Archduke Quenore stopped talking. The atmosphere in the meeting room sank even heavier with that word. The Archduke took a long breath as he rested his arm on the map of the North spread out on the table.

“And there’s still quite a bit of time left before reinforcements arrive.”

The reply to the request for support is the reinforcements. Since the survival of the kingdom, the continent, and possibly the world depended on it, reinforcements would surely come, but even if they rode their horses day and night, it would take more time until they reached Evernode. It wasn’t much of a problem to deal with only monsters right away, but it’s a different story when a ‘giant’ directly joins the battlefield.

“The boundary line has already covered the forest. It seems that even the walls of the castle have already begun to fall under its influence.”

The sky was not as bright as before. With the sun barely revealing its shape through the thick clouds, snow clouds filtered the sunlight to reveal a gloomy morning. Soldiers who had fought without coats until yesterday began to pack blankets and thick coats one by one, and a sudden gust of wind hit the wall, making a howling ghost.

“In bad weather, monsters can attack casually, but we can’t fight well. From tomorrow, casualties will rise noticeably. If there are still many of those corps commanders left, it might be difficult to maintain the front line. There are many excellent knights in Evernode, but you don’t know how much power those damn monsters have.”

Archduke Quenore put his finger on the Evernode Fortress on the map. After that, I looked at the places marked ‘Forest Beyond’, ‘Limit Line’, and ‘Grand Gorge’. Evernode was standing on the last road to the continent.

“I don’t think we have that many options. So, before presenting my countermeasures, I want to hear your opinions. lease.”

The Grand Duke looked at Rhys first. Reese followed the archduke’s finger and looked down at the map.

“What do you think?”

“It doesn’t matter how many people come. We are only protecting Evernode. As I always do, I will stand here and greet the incoming monsters.”

Reese’s voice was determined. The Archduke didn’t agree with Rhys’ words and just nodded.

“Next, Hamill.”

“I am the same as Reese. A knight who was born and raised here, what other option could he choose?”

Evernode’s knights gave the same answer. Even though he knew that no other answer would come out, Archduke Quenore looked at each of the participating knights and asked a question. It was as if he was checking and confirming the resolve of the knights. The vassal and the chamberlain also gave the same answer.

“… yes. Well then, let’s ask outsiders for their opinions.”

The Archduke’s blue eyes stared at me. I couldn’t read the thoughts of Archduke Quenore.

“There is also a way to abandon this castle and retreat, Hero Illroy. There is a way to empty a city in the south, reorganize there with the power of the capital, and launch a counterattack. Don’t you think that’s more likely to catch a giant?”

“That is not possible. Evernode must be defended.”

I answered immediately. Evernode is not the front line, but the last line of defense. In the original version, he gave up the entire Evernode without being able to stop the approaching giant. Numerous knights, including the Grand Duke of Quenore, were oxidized along with the fortress, and monsters spread throughout the world, spreading fear of disaster.

“Why do you think so too, Illroy?”

I narrowed my brows and opened my mouth.

“If a giant crosses this citadel, the limit line will completely freeze the world, and the giant will trample every city and country in the world simply by walking.”

As usual, I touched the handle of my sword and spoke calmly of the disaster that would happen. The faces of the people gathered at the table became more rigid at my words.

“Even if we withdraw from this place, there is no guarantee that there will be a next one. Calamity and its demonic spirits won’t stop and reorganize the road just because they occupy this place, and they won’t stay satisfied. They will go on without knowing the end until the world is destroyed. By freezing mountains, rivers, lakes, and seas.”

I don’t know what Arjen would have thought. Because he always chose the path of defeating calamity. In the original story, Evernode’s collapse was always portrayed as inevitable. People said it was the hero’s fault for not defeating him first. Was it really so?

“It won’t be able to stop the spread of monsters. If you go beyond Evernode, you will be able to go anywhere on the continent.”

The Archduke nodded. It seems to be a lot lighter.

“yes. thank you for saying that What do you think of the other warriors’ parties?”

I could feel Georg’s gaze on me. It was a very complicated look.

“I am… I agree with the warrior’s opinion.”

Georg spat out those words and said nothing more. Marianne and Daphne both nodded their heads, but did not offer a different opinion. After hearing the opinions of everyone in the meeting, Archduke Quenore closed his eyes. In the silent conference room, only the sound of dancing fire can be heard.

“Do this.”

The Grand Duke opened his eyes and opened his mouth at the same time.

“I will divide the army into two branches. One remains in Evernode to guard the castle, and one opens the castle gate and advances toward the heart of the enemy.”

My eyes opened wide.

“By repeating fighting and retreating, the advance of the base is delayed, and damage is accumulated. And if reinforcements from the capital arrive, leave Mercury to them and we will set out to drop the fourth plague.”

Archduke Quenore’s head turned to me.

“I will take care of delaying the advance. And Hero Illroy, I’ll ask you, along with Rhys, to guard the Evernode.”

“… If you break through the enemy forces, there won’t be many troops flocking to the walls, so it’s better for me to accompany you to slow the giant’s advance.”

I said that out of some uneasiness. In the original work, it was mentioned that the Grand Duke had blocked the giant’s advance alone several times, but now it was impossible to just trust the description of the original work. And Archduke Quenore shook his head at my suggestion.

“It won’t take that many men to break through the enemy forces. And we need someone who can be the focal point for the Suseong War. If not you, who else will save the soldiers in danger?”

The Archduke had confidence in me. However, I was afraid to entrust the disaster to the Grand Duke alone. I couldn’t completely believe the original description.

“If you want to protect Evernode, there is no other alternative, Illroy. We need to buy time until we can deal with them with all our might. And I am strong enough not to need your help.”

I bit my lip. No alternative was seen. If you rebel against the Archduke’s words and force yourself to accompany them, you can do it, but as the Archduke said, there will be no one to protect the soldiers and the citadel.

“All right. only,”

I said, sticking out a finger.

“Promise me that you will not be greedy to defeat the giant. If you are driven to a crisis, you must retreat unconditionally.”

“Of course I promise. Unlike you, I have no greed to steal my major.”

The Archduke of Quenore joked and laughed. The knights of Evernode gasped at the words of the Grand Duke and burst into laughter one by one. The frozen atmosphere in the conference room softened a little.

“The unit that delays the advance of the giants will be composed of the elite and the minimum number of people. I hope there are no more than twenty people. The warrior party, Reese, and Serene remain. Hemil, you follow me, and I hope Hans, Adrian, and Tyrone follow me.”

The Archduke of Quenore quickly began organizing his troops. After careful consideration, the grand duke selected 15 people. The Grand Duke ended the meeting with the list.

“We will start tomorrow morning before the battle begins. Today, I can go in and rest.”

The Archduke stood up first and spoke. The archduke’s steps as he left his seat seemed heavier than usual. The door to the meeting room opened and closed. The wind coming in through the crack in the door swayed the torch and went out. Smoke billowed out, making the air in the conference hall hazy.

“You should be back by tomorrow morning. If you have enough health left, you might be able to attack the monsters invading from the front.”

The morning after the meeting, the Archduke of Quenore spoke on horseback. I stood at the doorway of the outer castle holding the holy sword to open their way.

“Good luck, Grand Duke. Please come back safely.”

“Why don’t you worry about you rather than me? Stop worrying about me and protect this castle well.”

Open!!

Rumble, rumble.

The bars of the gate were raised. Demonic spirits showed their teeth and came out to meet the Grand Duke and me. I opened the 1st stage of the holy sword and took a radiating ceremony. The Grand Duke looked at my posture and smiled.

“great. In times like these, don’t save your energy and use it sparingly.”

“Please concentrate.”

I bluntly accepted the Grand Duke’s words and raised my spirits. The monsters started to hesitate little by little in the pure white standing air. I drew the holy sword as it was, and the monsters on the road were swept away and the road opened. The Archduke immediately stabbed the horse in the side and started to run.

“I will go.”

“I will keep it well.”

I looked at the backs of the archduke and the knights, who were getting smaller like dots, until the castle gate closed, then went back up the castle wall.

On that day, the number of monsters attacking the castle wall was small. When the attack was not strong, the soldiers began to tremble in fear rather than being relieved. After a day that was more tense than a fight, night came again. I stayed up all night with my eyes open that day.

next day.

After the sun rose, the demons started knocking on the castle gate again, but the knights still did not return.

  1. SenatorArmstrong says:

Arjen is a mercenary whose main focus is winning battles regardless of anything else with maximum efficiency. Ilroy is a hero whose main focus is minimizing casualties and defeating the main enemy.

If theres anything thats to be said its that Ilroys plan is self destructive, yet he is the one who focuses less on himself and more than on others. Thats basically a hero in its truest sense. Guys like Shirou Emiya.

  2. Extra says:

Isis, are you feeling guilty and regretful for supprting Arjen during the Kraken incident? Good. This will help you reflect and change for the better.

This chapter gives even more confirmation that both OG Illroy and MC Illroy share the same ideals.

The plan to not abandon Evernode is very similar to the plan OG Illroy would’ve carried out if not for Arjen forcing his own plan (which resulted in many people needlessly dying or getting hurt). That’s why Georg was shown having complicated feelings in this chapter.
