“The saintess was there too. Everyone come over here and sit down.”

The local governor guided us in a tired voice. The temporary office on the second floor was narrow. It was difficult for all four of our party, Bishop, Isis, and Arjen to enter, so in the end, only me, Bishop, and Isis decided to stay on the second floor. The governor brought a chair to sit in front of a small table and patted his back.

“Supervising a recovery site often involves standing still for long periods of time… . hahahaha. Even if I look a little ugly, I hope you will be kind to me.”

Bishop Andrew chuckled.

“You are suffering a lot. How can you call the efforts to restore the region ugly?”

“It is a harsh time for everyone.”

At the bishop’s words, the prefect smiled bitterly. A deep shadow penetrated his wrinkled face.

“You said you were contacted by His Majesty.”

“Yes. The bishop said he would use his strength to catch heresy spreading throughout the area.”

Bishop Andrew nodded and looked at me and Isis.

“It is to punish a group of hypocrites. Fortunately, the hero readily agreed to my request and said he would help weed out the heresy.”

“okay… Even the warrior.”

The governor looked at me with a sigh. I couldn’t look him straight in the eyes. At least here, to him, I won’t be seen as a good person or a savior.

“Hasn’t it been a while since the fourth plague was defeated? Even though you must still be a little tired, you were willing to come to help our province. I can’t help but say thank you.”

“We will do our best.”

The governor bowed his head, and I too hurriedly bowed my head to receive his greeting. There is no malice. I wasn’t saying it sarcastically, but instead it became a sharp arrow to me.

“After the saintess came out of the warrior party, she immediately came to help Bakhtins. I received a lot of help back then, but I never thought I would see you again this early.”

Isis just nodded. I stared blankly at her pale face. Isis inadvertently raised her head in my direction, then quickly dropped it. Her blue eyes had been trembling ever since they met again.

“I don’t think I’ll be of much help in this investigation because of the supervision of the recovery site. Aside from the occasional investigation meeting, there won’t be much I can be involved with. If you need anything… .”

As if Bishop Andrew had been waiting, he opened his mouth.

“If there is a church that is still active, I would like to work there as a base.”

“… Yes. There is probably an old church some distance from the village. I know that believers are still diligently looking for churches. I heard that the saintess’ healing activities were of great help in strengthening her faith.”

“like. We will make sure that we can drive out the cults that are eating away at this area.”

Bishop Andrew looked at Isis.

“Isis, along with the other priests, please take good care of the believers here.”

It’s rather Isis that I think I need to read. I looked at Isis with a frown, but as if she wanted to avoid me even coming into her field of vision, she turned her face away and nodded.

“When are you planning to start the investigation?”

Bishop Andre lightly touched his palms and rubbed them together slowly.

“We want to start as soon as the headquarters is set up in the church. Did you say that the main area of activity for the worshipers of the apocalypse is definitely the side of the settlement that accommodated the refugees?”

“… Yes. Many people have left because of the evacuation order, but there are still many people who do not go out. I tried to do something by mobilizing the guards, but it seemed like the conflict would get worse.”

“All right. We would be careful too, but if the resistance of heretics is strong… .”

The nodding bishop’s eyes pierced the prefect’s eyes like a dagger.

“Keep in mind that we may be forced to use some ‘rough methods’.”

“… Of course, I am aware of it.”

The prefect nodded with a stiff expression, and the bishop stood up with a benevolent smile. Isis and I also got up together and followed the bishop. The governor looked at us like that and suddenly called me to stop.

“Hero.”

The governor’s gaze contained emotions that were difficult to define. Resentment, sadness, anger, or resignation. I knew resignation was the scariest of them all.

“The residents will not welcome the hero very much. Some residents will even resent it. Especially after news of the North, Evernode spread here.”

I bit my lip. The flesh is torn, and the bloody smell travels down the tongue, down the throat, and into the nostrils.

“… I can’t tell you what, but please have mercy on them.”

“Yes. All right.”

Isis sighed beside her, but she immediately froze on the spot without being able to speak out what was in her head. The bishop stood at the door, urged us on, and I tapped Isis on the shoulder and spoke to her.

“Let’s go back.”

Isis was startled when my hand touched her shoulder and stepped back. It was only then that I was able to meet Isis’ eyes. Is this the first time since I was possessed here? Isis was then looking at me with her eyes burning with rage. Why did you send him out of the party? Asking if I’m sane, intense and emotional. Even so, it was a confident look.

“… .”

Now it was just the eyes of a frightened child. As soon as I saw those eyes, I couldn’t help but reflexively narrow my eyebrows. The depth of the pain seemed too much for her to bear.

“Isis.”

I spoke to Isis again in a soft voice. Isis looked at me with eyes as if she had come to her senses only then. I let out a small sigh and nodded my head in the direction of the bishop. The bishop had his eyes fixed on Isis.

“Let’s hurry up. The crew will be waiting for you.”

The church the governor had taught me was relatively intact compared to other ruins, perhaps because it was located on a high ground. The autumn rain showed no sign of stopping even in the afternoon. After Daphne briefly tidied up the interior of the church with her magic, the bishop called us right away.

“First of all, I would like to explain a few things to keep in mind before the investigation.”

As if it was also used as a school, there was a blackboard hanging on the wall of the church. The bishop picked up a piece of chalk the size of a little finger that had fallen on the floor and began to explain like a teacher.

“We will divide the group into two groups. Joe conducts extensive investigations during the day and secretly watches over them at night. Of course, as I said, the night is a dangerous time, so the Heretic Questioner will be in charge of monitoring. I’m warning you here… .”

cook. The bishop marked the blackboard with chalk.

“Except for special circumstances, solo activities in the village are strictly prohibited at night. Darkness is an attribute of demons, and the active time of worshipers who roam in the shadows. At night, their power is especially strong. No matter how much we are, even you, mercenary Arjen, can be dangerous.”

The bishop, who had written ‘Night X’ on the board, moved his hand to the side.

“The symbol of doomsday worship – I mean, the symbol of devil worship looks like this.”

The bishop drew a pentagram on the blackboard.

“star… ?”

“Please understand that I can only show you this way because it is too bad to draw it yourself. Their symbol is a pentagram with its head turned to the ground. therefore,”

The bishop pointed at the top of the asterisk.

“You can think of this pentagram turned upside down. We will call this reverse pentagram. They will have this symbol somewhere on their bodies. Either as a tattoo or as a symbol.”

Bishop Andrew looked at the star with fierce eyes, then erased it as if he was displeased.

“another one. Hasty action is contraindicated. We are short on staff. If we blindly catch heresy just because we can see it, we’ll get rid of them before we even hit them on the head, or vice versa.”

Next to ‘Night X’, ‘Star X’ was written.

“Our objective is to approach them step by step, find out the leaders of the plague worshipers, catch them and strike them down. Keep that in mind.”

Bishop Andrew put down the chalk and wiped his hands.

“Then let’s start the inquiry first. Roles are assigned to each of them. The hero may feel cramped at first, but please make sure to wear the helmet. I think you can think of it as a soldier role that roughly carries out me.”

pitch. I frowned and nodded. Somehow, that bishop seemed to take a subtle pleasure in having me act as a soldier to accompany him.

“Isis, you will be together later. If you are involved in the process of monitoring the atmosphere and figuring out how to conduct an investigation, you may be wary. Please wait here with the Heretic Questioners.”

“… All right.”

The bishop stood up and looked at me.

“Come on, let’s go. Warrior.”

psycho kid.

“Isis.”

Isis stopped at the bishop’s voice calling her and turned around. Investigators were on their way out of the church. Daphne acts as an assistant to the bishop disguised as a chamberlain, Georg acts as a knight, and Illroy and Marianne act as escorts. The rain turned to drizzle and fell lightly on their raincoats and armor.

“Bishop.”

Bishop Andrew’s expression and voice were stern.

“How long are you going to stay like that?”

Isis blinked and looked at the bishop. couldn’t tell He didn’t have the courage to say what had happened that day or why he was shaking so much.

“I know you’ve been through a lot supporting the recovery efforts here, but we need your help now. No matter what, the people here will trust you.”

At the word trust, a ripple rippled through Isis’ eyes again. The bishop clearly witnessed it, but did not ask why.

“I hope you will come to your senses as soon as possible. A simple inquiry won’t take long, and the saintess’ turn will come sooner or later.”

“… Yes, I understand.”

Bishop Andre looked over Isis’s shoulder. Arjen was sitting in a chair and watching him quietly.

“Please protect Isis, mercenary.”

The Bishop then approached the warriors. Isis watched them walk away, then slowly returned to the church and sat down on a chair with her legs crossed. After the party of warriors disappeared from sight, all you could hear was the sound of drizzling rain knocking on leaves.

“Yes, Arjen.”

Arjen turned his head toward Isis. Dark shadows and pale light fell on Arjen’s face. He was the same as usual even at times like this. Isis didn’t know if she should consider that fortunate.

“If I had held you back then, if I had told you to follow Illroy’s opinion, how would you have reacted?”

When Arjen heard the question, he gently closed his eyes and then opened them.

“There is no change. I would have stuck with my opinion. Even if my party’s opinion leaned that way, I would have gone to the commander-in-chief and persuaded him to change his mind.”

“… Why are you so sure it was?”

Arjen’s voice was dry.

“If we fought like that, one of our party members would surely have died. It could have been Georg, it could have been Nella, it could have been you. I don’t know what happened to the hero.”

Arjen shook his head.

“Even with that, there is no guarantee that the Kraken will be stopped. And if the party is defeated there, there will be no next time. You just have to keep sucking your fingers.”

Isis buried her face in her lap. Arjen’s voice continued to be heard.

“After all this has happened, regretting the choice won’t change anything.”

The last was Arjen’s self-talk. Arjen patted Isis on the shoulder and stood up.

“This is my way. Measuring potential with human lives has been what I have been doing all my life.”

Isis was left alone in the church, watching the rain fall. Imagining the sound of the warrior’s footsteps descending towards the village in the distance.

“I thought it would be terrible when I heard the story.”

I heard Daphne muttering. Looking at the scenery of the village reflected through the bars of my visor, I sighed inwardly.

“… This.”

The scenery of the village could not be said to be clean and good even with empty words. A stench wafted through the air as houses made of boards were glued together to form a maze-like alleyway. Since the drainage was not properly equipped, not only the smell of excrement, but also the stench of unwashed people and the smell of rotting flesh. However, I felt a great sense of incongruity in the appearance of the people in it.

“It’s strange.”

Bishop Andre murmured, and I could only nod my head.

It was because all the villagers I could see had a comfortable smile on their faces.

  1. Chronepsis says:

I can understand arjen point of choosing the path that has a higher chance of winning but i hate the fact that he didnt even try to take responsibility for his actions. He insist that elroy plan is gonna ends up in someone deaths so he choose to sacrifice a whole city instead. I understand that. I would also do the same if i am in his position where i had to choose between a loved ones or a stranger but i hate the fact that he just pushes the blame to elroy, if you did something then take responsibility for it. And that saint btch is just gonna keep crying in a corner or what? Drop dead already…

  2. Shadow says:

We can’t say that arjen is wrong, if they failed more people would have died, arjen is just more logical and calculating than illroy. Even if they did try illroys plan they had no guarantee of winning, arjen just chose the plan with a higher chance of winning.

  3. Extra says:

God I really bloody dislike Arjen’s character, his mindset in particular is really infuriating.

I can see why the OG Illroy couldn’t get along with him, because if it were me in his position I wouldn’t be able to get along with him either

  4. huehue huehue says:

Man, and the blame falls on Illroy, while Isis and Arjen and treated good because of the post-recovery. Well, this wouldn’t have happened if you guys listened to Illroy. F*ck you all.
