I Became a Bookkeeper the Monarchs Are Obsessed With chapter 56

56 – Tactics Examination – Part 1

After a while, we moved to Dian’s office. And started a conversation.

“It is strange. The Battle of the Immor River was not lost because of Professor Diane’s fault.”

To be precise, the prince or his secretaries were at fault.

“Maybe it is. Even so, wouldn’t it be impossible to hold the Crown Prince responsible? Sir Liam is also close to the crown prince, so there’s no way Sir Liam will be held accountable.”

Liam de Bordeaux. A bookkeeper of the prince and a bookkeeper with ambiguous abilities that are not at the top level. The biggest problem with this child is that his personality is dirty. He must have put the blame on Dian to evade his responsibility.

“So, what exactly are you worried about? Do you want to be appointed as the vanguard again?”

“No, actually, it wasn’t my fault, so how could I be dissatisfied with being dismissed? But it’s a problem because my nephew’s path to success is also blocked because of me.”

“If it’s a nephew, then… ”

That friend who came out at the right time and fought alongside me when I started fighting the besiegers of Crotea Castle. What was your name?

“Juan de Balboa.”

“right! Mr Juan. He was quite capable.”

“okay. He’s my nephew, but unlike me, he’s calm and intelligent, so he’s worth using. They say that since I fell out of office, I’ve been treated as a kite that has fallen out of the army of His Highness the Crown Prince. If you bring him into the family, the borders of His Highness the Crown Prince will expand to the north, so there will be no war with the north, and there will be no need for Juan to make a major contribution. It’s just a concern. Charles, what would you do?”

In a word, the problem is that his nephew’s path to success was blocked by his own downfall. What can I do to open up Juan’s career path?

‘To put it mildly, the reason Dian fell was because the crown prince was incompetent. Then it’s a problem that can be solved just by following a competent monarch. For example, Diane de Balboa is also bordering with Princess Leonia, so all problems are solved just by joining Princess Leonia. isn’t it? for a moment.’

All problems are solved just by sticking to Princess Leonia. But it wasn’t Dian who couldn’t have thought of this much. Then why the hell are you asking me for a solution? Do you know yourself?

“Professor Diane.”

“What is it?”

“Don’t you already know the answer?”

Dian pondered for a while before saying this.

“ha… okay. To be honest, I know the answer. The problem started with betraying Her Highness the Princess and joining Her Highness the Crown Prince. At the time, I thought that was the correct answer. Because His Highness, the Crown Prince, had the greatest power in the world. However, looking at it now, Her Highness as the princess was superior in her qualifications as a monarch. I was overlooking that.”

“Then do you want to join Her Highness?”

“It’s like that, but I’m afraid of the criticism I’ll hear from the world if I betray again after I’ve already betrayed. If it happens once, it will be an object of extenuating circumstances, but if it happens twice, you will hear that the Balboa family is prone to betrayal. I am afraid of that.”

“So, do you need a way to get under Her Highness without hearing the criticism of the public?”

“It’s embarrassing, but that’s how the story goes. Is there any way?”

If you ask if there is no way… have.

“Actually, there is one way.”

“What is it?”

“It’s just a matter of making His Highness the Crown Prince betray the Balboa family first. Then, the Balboa family will become an object of sympathy and will be able to enter under Her Highness without being criticized by the world.”

Diane was startled. It seemed like he had never thought of it that way.

“But how? Would it be so easy for His Highness to betray me?”

“It’s not easy. There are prerequisites for that.”

“If it is a prerequisite… ”

“Her Highness the Princess and Her Highness the Crown Prince are competing, and after Her Highness’s victory, the castle of Crotea is besieged. The Balboa family asks Her Highness for reinforcements, but Her Highness the Crown Prince doesn’t have the strength to send them. In this way, even if the Balboa family gave up their allegiance to His Highness, it would not be a betrayal. Because Your Highness broke the feudal contract to protect your subjects first.”

Diane thought. It makes sense. It makes logical sense, but…

“Is it possible for Her Highness the Princess to defeat Her Highness the Crown Prince? Even if Her Highness’s forces were squeezed out, it would be close to 7,000, and Her Highness the Crown Prince is recovering the national power every moment, so in a little while we should be able to mobilize over 20,000.”

Did the prince’s forces have already recovered to that point? I didn’t know that, but it was ridiculous. It is truly grievous that he ate the land of the affluent Vinebia region just because he was the eldest son without the ability. If another great monarch had eaten there, it would have been over in an instant. However…

“Her Highness the Princess is reorganizing the military system. You’re introducing new weapons and tactics. If Her Highness is properly prepared, winning against Her Highness would not be a dream.”

“What kind of new weapon is it that you win against an enemy who is close to three times your size? I don’t understand.”

that’s what i don’t understand For those unfamiliar with the new tactics of muskets and tercios. However, in the history of the game, the princess actually beats the crown prince. ‘Battle of Eitrich’ Of course, it wasn’t something that was accomplished with only the new weapon. It was also a triumph of superior tactical skill.

“Whether you believe it or not, that is your freedom. I’m just giving the answer to the best of my knowledge. However, the problem is that you don’t know when His Highness the Crown Prince and Her Highness will fight, and the problem is that Sir Juan has to work in the military camp of His Highness the Crown Prince, who has no way to get ahead… ”

“I’m worried about that too.”

Juan de Balboa. The last time I saw him, he seemed like a pretty competent person. It was the same when he hit the enemy’s rear at the right time, and he showed a pretty good appearance with tight command during the battle.

“You say that Sir Juan has no intention of becoming a mercenary?”

“mercenary?”

There was a shortage of men to run the musketeers. It was unknown whether Manfred would join Charles or not, but Charles thought that there was nothing wrong with having many talented people.

“I created a mercenary group. Of course, in terms of money, it won’t be as affluent as working under the Crown Prince, but I think working in a mercenary group with a bright future is better for the future than working in the military where the career path is blocked.”

“It’s a gamble.”

That’s right. In modern terms, it was about leaving a large company and entering a small business.

“It will be the difference between sinking slowly and stably, or struggling even if it is a little dangerous. I have no doubt that Sir Juan would choose the latter.”

Because there is no way that such a competent person could not be without ambition.

“okay. Let’s talk about Juan. But I can’t guarantee you’ll accept it.”

“Yes. It is enough just to deliver it well.”

The next day, Dian disappeared without a trace again. Professor Merkatz agreed to hold the position as interim professor for a few more months until the next professor was appointed. And when a week passed, a letter came from Juan.

[I heard the story from my aunt. Charles Jean Rochepole is looking for an officer. It was a car that I was very impressed with when I saw Charles’ conduct the previous day. If it’s okay for Charles, I’d like to leave the army of Her Highness the Crown Prince and work under Charles.]

In the end, they accept it.

Soon, after exchanging several more letters, Juan came down to Arcadia, and Juan worked under Charles as an officer supervising the musketeers.

It didn’t solve Dian’s worries, but in any case, from Charles’ point of view, it was a benefit because he had a fairly outstanding subordinate.

While Charles struggled for a month to create a mercenary corps, the academy was preparing for a new tactical exam.

The previous tactics test was sparring with wooden dolls. However, this tactical exam was different. If the last test was a relative evaluation through competition, this one was an absolute evaluation. That’s because this test was a test that I took alone. Professor Merkatz said.

“When this trial begins, the Illusion Wizards will welcome you. The illusions shown by the Illusion Wizard are illusions of many battles that have occurred in the past. You will choose one of several battles and become the general who leads that battle. Among those battles, there are easy battles that are obvious to win, and difficult battles that are almost impossible to win. If you pick an easy battle, you’ll win easily, but you’ll get fewer points. If you choose a difficult battle, your points will be high, but you may lose. So choose a battle that suits your skills and do your best to show your best.”

It’s hard to explain, but it’s easy to compare like this.

In games based on history, there is a ‘trial mode’ or ‘historical battle mode’. It was a mode that placed soldiers in battle units that occurred in real history and allowed users to experience those battles indirectly.

This test was also a similar test. It was a test that showed the same illusion as the actual battlefield and if you led the soldiers to victory in the illusion, you could get points.

‘Well, can I not do it?’

thought Charles. In a situation where you have already won a real war and been given a lot of credits, there is no need to risk your life in each of these tests. In the meantime, it was better to care about the operation of the mercenaries.

However, when the exam started, Charles felt that his plan to pass the exam properly and focus on managing the mercenary group started to go wrong. It’s because from the beginning, a huge change started to happen.

Princess Leonia chose ‘The Battle of the Imor River’. Also on the side of the prince. This was like showing off to the crown prince, ‘You couldn’t win, but I can win’.

I’ve been thinking, but isn’t the range of bows much further than that of muskets? Muskets are also highly inaccurate, so I’m a but confused on how wars can be won if there’s a bunch of archers pelting the enemy with arrows from much further than bullets can reach.

    1. Virilio says:

Is not really about the competence of bows vs muskets.
But the availability of archers and murketeers. In a escenario of war that could take a long time it could take you many months or even years to train an average war-ready archer but it only takes a couple of weeks/a month to teach someone to use a musket. So in the long run you are able to arm more soldiers with muskets than with bows.
