“Oh man, this is great! I’m in a different class from Miwa and Sae, so I didn’t know anyone in here. I was starting to get worried.”
The one waiting for me as I stepped into the classroom was a girl with a cheerful, lively voice who quickly closed the distance between us.
She was average height. Her outfit was rather flashy, though, and despite it being the first day of school, she had a very casual way of wearing her uniform, with her skirt being quite short. I wondered if it violated the school dress code .
I could see a charm or something attached to her phone sticking out of her pocket, and it kept making a jingling sound.
She had the style of a delinquent schoolgirl.
It seemed that hadn’t changed even now that she was in high school.
“…We’re acquaintances? I don’t think we’ve ever really talked, Mihara-san.”
I certainly knew her—Suzuka Mihara.
She was one of the girls who had surrounded the school idol Miwa during the latter half of middle school.
I seem to recall that she had originally been a member of the Kijima group, and her role was to get the party started by being the first to make a ruckus.
Her grades hadn’t been very good, but the fact that she was here in this school wearing a uniform meant that she must have passed the entrance exam.
“Is that right? Well, Tsujimura-kun, you always seemed to have this aura about you like you didn’t want anyone to talk to you. It felt like you were putting up this huge wall, especially around everyone except Miwa, so I just figured I’d leave you alone. Sorry about that!”
As Mihara scratched her head, her lightly dyed twintails swayed from side to side.
It seemed to perfectly reflect her own carefree personality, and I didn’t really feel like she was apologizing.
“Sigh… Whatever.”
“It was great that Miorin and the others helped me study, but I was really shocked when everyone except for those two failed. Itou-kun is kind of hard to talk to, and I was wondering what to do since I’m not in the same classroom as those two anymore, and then there was Tsujimura-kun’s name. This must be a godsend. Oh man, this is great!”
Miura was getting excited all on his own, ignoring me.

He’s still the same. He hasn’t changed a bit.
He’s a popular kid, but even among them, he’s the type who doesn’t really think about anything, is happy-go-lucky, and only shows interest in things that stand out or catch his attention. For better or worse, he’s a Cheerful and upbeat guy.
That’s my image of Suzaku Miura.
Compared to Kishima, who clearly has something going on behind the scenes, she’s better, but as a natural-born popular kid who doesn’t hide herself, she stands out whether she likes it or not.
I’d say she’s a fatally incompatible match for me, who doesn’t want to stand out.
In that sense, she’s worse because she has no malicious intent.
In fact, because of his loud voice earlier, the eyes of the classroom are starting to gather on us.
I shifted my position slightly to hide Akane-san.
“Miura-san, I would think you’d be able to make friends right away…”
“Of course I can, but it’s still unsettling. It makes me feel more secure. They say friends are the ones you should have.”

I hold back the urge to say that.
This isn’t going to end if I let it continue.
“Fine, whatever… Just let me through…”
“Huh? Tsujimura-kun, who’s the girl behind you?”
When I tried to end the conversation by force, Miura seemed to notice Akane-san behind me and peeked at her.
“Hey…”
“Oh, she’s cute. Is she your new girlfriend, Tsujimura-kun?”
And just like that, he dropped a huge bombshell between us.
