115 – The Approaching Shadow (5)

“Stop!”

From noble mtl dot com

Gail’s thunderous voice echoes through the mine.

At that sound, all of Chief Joe lowered their swords.

He strode towards me from behind the ranks.

I also cut off the breath of the monster in front of me and looked at Gale like that.

Gale was crumpling his face with a look he hadn’t seen before.

I can clearly feel the anger.

“What have you been doing since earlier…! Berg!”

He shouted. I couldn’t understand his anger.

“…What did you not like so much from earlier?”

“Aren’t you crazy about dying right now! Why are you doing such a dangerous thing!”

I said to him with a quiet voice.

“…This is the original way we do it.”

“Are you saying that you bear all the risks? Are there so many people here?”

“The crew is helping me. So far, this method has worked well for me.”

Gail said as she looked around at the top group members.

“…Yes. Okay…! I’ll admit that your men support you well. But that doesn’t mean it’s right! Isn’t it a structure that doesn’t work without you!”

“Isn’t I here?”

“Don’t spread sophistry! I’m asking why you took such a risky course!”

-Squat!

Gael said, stepping on the monster I had just killed.

“I can understand why the number of bosses is like this…! He must have been taking risks alone before, acting in such a dangerous way…!”

Now he called out to my men.

“And the crew members, the vice-captain is taking such a risk alone, and they are just watching!”

I said that to Gail.

“I ordered you to do this. Leave my men behind.”

This is what the crew members have said to me many times over the years. To give them a chance too.

As much as Baran was especially like that, he must have had something to say… But he kept his mouth shut with a guilty expression.

The mood is already shifting towards Gale.

I said.

“What’s so bad about the most talented people taking the most risks?”

“I’m just saying that because it goes too far…!”

“Don’t shake my men. I’m just afraid that your screams will break the breathing I’m used to.”

I was sincere.

I don’t know if it’s close to others, but to balance that closeness, we’ve been working together for a long time.

I can’t stand watching people say that it’s not the standard way.

No matter how great Gale was, there was always goodness.

This was too deep a line for him to cross.

Also…Even if I wanted to change something, that wasn’t the conversation I was having right now.

If you want to change your strategy, that’s a story you have to get out of the training ground.

It wasn’t something to do now that the battle isn’t over.

It only increases the needless risk.

Gail said.

“As a result of watching, there are no members lacking in skills. Even if breathing changes, everyone can adapt enough! You know that too-“

“-Stop.”

While continuing the short conversation, I saw new monsters approaching from behind Gale.

“Let’s talk later.”

I raised my sword. The same was true of the head team members.

At the same time, I give orders to the crew.

“Don’t change anything! Now go as you normally would!”

Gayle cleared his throat as if he was frustrated by those words.

Then he says.

“…From now on, I will stand by your side.”

He said.

I looked at Gale…Nodded and looked ahead.

****

Ner had a hazy morning.

I keep touching my cheek.

I keep thinking of unrealistic moments.

I didn’t know that expressing affection from a loved one would be so happy.

No matter how much love is said to be good and beautiful here and there… I wondered if that joy would be within a predictable range.

I feel strong and refreshed. Another moment, very happy.

I thought it might be on that level.

But it wasn’t.

Pleasure flows through your head just by thinking about that moment.

My heart beats like it’s about to explode. The tail wags wildly.

It was difficult to control my body.

Nevertheless, it was a sensation that was still hard to explain.

“… Ha.”

She sighed and tried to calm her mind.

Ever since she realized her feelings for Berg… Her feelings continue to grow.

You may not realize it right away, but looking back you can see how far you have come.

In the past, I hated being touched.

The tail was never allowed to touch him.

But now I want to touch him with my tail.

When I was by his side, he unconditionally wrapped his tail around him.

I wanted to bite you, I wanted to hug you.

I couldn’t even imagine the acts of love after that.

How can I imagine what will happen after that when my lips touching my cheeks make me tremble like this.

-Talk.

Ner touched my cheek again.

“… Ha.”

Then he sighs again.

How should I explain this feeling?

Ner, who was thinking about the expression, smiled.

I didn’t expect myself to think like this.

…Now, even the bullying of the brothers was understandable to some extent.

Now that I know love, I think I can understand the opposite.

Why did you have such hostility, why did you hate it so much?

Even this may be Berg healing his wounds.

He seemed to be able to understand and forgive the brothers so much he could not understand, and so much he could not forgive.

Ner stood up to calm himself down.

I went out to the terrace of the inn and looked down at the village.

Unlike other villages, it might be because the dwarf village is rich enough to sell weapons.

A bright atmosphere permeated the whole town.

Laughs and smiles are in full bloom.

“…”

In the past, those smiles were something I could only envy, but now Ner was also a member of the people who could smile that smile.

“Honey, try it.”

“Eat yourself first!”

A Lizardman couple was roasting sesame seeds on the street.

Ner saw that and smiled.

It was even more so in the fortress.

When I see a couple on good terms, I feel good.

…It was like seeing your own future.

“… Ha.”

She sighed again and calmed her chest.

“You look good.”

At that moment, a voice rang from behind.

When Nere looked back in surprise, Arwin had entered the room.

Ner blinked at Arwin who suddenly appeared, and Arwin explained himself.

“… I knocked on her door, but I guess I didn’t hear.”

“Ah, that’s right. Sorry. I was distracted for a while.”

“No, it’s okay.”

Arwin slowly closes her distance, and she sits next to Nere.

She also looked down at her street.

Arwin, who had been spending time peacefully for a long time, asks.

“So? Did something nice happen?”

“Yes?”

“I heard she was wagging her tail as she came in.”

“…Ah.”

While Ner thinks of that kiss again… Arwin whispers.

“…Is it because it’s the freedom that came back after a long time?”

Ner turned her head to look at Arwin.

“…”

Freedom. Does Arwin feel that way when Berg leaves?

Ner didn’t bother to refute that statement.

“…Yes. Yes.”

It was like that before, but I couldn’t pretend to be with her now that I couldn’t figure out what Arwin’s intentions were.

It was better to keep it close by and be prepared for an emergency.

Isn’t there a saying to keep an unknown enemy closer than a friend?

After coming to like Berg, the psychological distance between Arwin and her seemed to gradually grow farther away.

Seeing Berg with Arwin, her hostility keeps rising.

I still haven’t forgotten the sight of Berg and Arwyn hugging each other in the meadow on the way to the dwarf village last time.

The anger I felt then.

Ner chewed on the awkwardness of that time…He said to clear the moment.

“…You must have had a hard time last time, Mr. Arwin.”

Arwin saw Nere.

“Which one?”

“…Why, the last time we were cuddling with Berg in the field.”

“…Ah.”

Arwin nodded slowly.

“Yes. It was hard…”

Ner was relieved by Arwin’s affirmation.

With the leeway that was created, she said.

“I will tell Berg not to do that in the future. Sometimes it seems like Berg forgets that he can’t be loved by Arwin.”

Arwin said, avoiding his gaze.

“…You don’t have to say that. You’re not close enough to force Berg to do that.”

“…”

“On top of that, aren’t you in a position where you can’t love Berg? So that’s my concern.”

“…”

Ner nodded her head very softly and tuned in to Arwyn’s tune.

Then my petty pride squirmed again.

Although Arwin doesn’t have any thoughts or inspiration… Since the topic ends with a story about hugs, it feels like Berg likes Arwin more.

No matter how much Arwin said he didn’t care, the awkwardness left by Ner was definitely by his side.

Should I say that it feels like the charm of a woman has been pushed aside?

I also had a desire to let people know that I am loved like this.

“Arwin-nim, though, is comfortable with it.”

“…What does that mean?”

As if Arwin was curious, he asked back.

She always seemed to have the hardest time keeping her mouth shut.

Ner tells Arwin the pride of her tickle.

It may seem like a nightmare to Arwin, but it was a moment that was more precious to her than anything else.

“…Because Berg kissed me on the cheek today.”

“…………..”

Ner turned her head and looked down at her street.

There was no response from Arwin for a long time.

“…It must have been painful.”

Arwin finally comforts me.

Ner shrugged her shoulders and let her comfort her.

“But now I am free like this.”

She said, releasing her aura with a sigh.

In the relaxed air, Nere looked at Arwin, smiling the smile she had been hiding.

“…Arwin. If you have any difficulties, please tell me. I will help you.”

Then he vaguely looked at Arwin.

I wondered if he would tell me the identity of the vial.

“…I will.”

But Arwin nodded and smiled lightly.

****

-Boo woo woo…! Boo woo woo…!

“What?”

Akran turned his head at the sound of the trumpet sounding from the wrong place.

Felix also drives his horse and looks in the direction of the trumpet sound.

The war was in full swing.

Today, the number of bosses subdued just yesterday was already four.

With the support of Drikus, I finally subdued one of the bosses today.

That was the last boss.

But the war was still in full swing.

Perhaps because it was a land deeply eroded by demons… The monsters did not disperse.

Even after the bosses were subdued, they started rampaging each other.

Maybe it was because it was delayed for so long.

The saintess went around purifying the land under the escort of a party of warriors, but it was not enough.

It was the right choice to use the remaining soldiers to clean up all the monsters.

While I was dealing with the monsters, that trumpet sounded.

“…Strange…”

Akran instinctively sensed something.

While Felix, Silprien, and the saintess all believed Akran’s intuition, hundreds of black dots rose into the sky from beyond the hill.

“… Huh?”

“Saintess!!”

Akran approached the saintess in an instant.

The saintess belatedly realized the identity of the black dots.

It was an arrow.

Hundreds of arrows began to rain down on the warrior party, Drikus’s army, and a group of monsters mixed together.

The hero stood by Silprien’s side and raised his shield high, and Akran also raised his shield beside the saintess.

-Kwagwagwagwagak!

The barrage of arrows that continued for such a long time passed by.

The saintess also looked at Akran, who protected her front.

“Ah, Akran…!”

Akran said as he pulled out a couple of arrows he couldn’t block from his lower body.

“I’m fine…! The saintess…!”

“I-I’m fine too.”

“Felix! Sylprien!”

Silprien answered from the front.

“We are fine too!”

The saintess looked around.

A lot of allies and monsters were dying from the shower of arrows.

From noble mtl dot com

An attack that would never be called a support shot.

Felix continued to watch the hill.

Soon afterwards, a man appears on top of the hill.

The Jackson family, the eldest son of his third wife.

“The bastards of this…Humans…!”

Seeing that, Felix finally spat out a curse.

In the meantime, pouring monsters began to surround the warrior party and Drikus’ army.

The speed of the vanguard, which was advancing, slowed down, and the main body, which followed belatedly, stumbled upon the corpses of already fallen allies and fell tangled up.

The blow from behind was fatal.

Hope disappears in an instant.

“Line by line…! Being blinded by greed until the end…!”

Silprien wakes up Felix who can’t control his anger.

“Felix! Starting with the problems ahead now…!”

Felix gritted his teeth and turned his head to look ahead.

I swung my shining holy sword and cut the approaching monster in half.

He shouts.

“Destroy the enemies in front of you!”

In a situation where hope disappeared momentarily, he encouraged the courage of the soldiers.

But in words, the difference did not seem to widen.

There seemed to be no escape.

In the meantime, the saintess looked up at the hill again.

Maybe the attackers thought it was over as well… No one could be found on the hill.

Maybe they moved again to contain other forces.

While Felix and Akran pushed back the encirclement of the monsters, the saintess tried to objectively judge the situation.

Soon she approached Silprien and said.

“Silprien…!”

“I know, saintess…!”

The elven wizard, eyes shining blue, looked up.

The saintess also looked up, and a red hawk that was circling around them began to fly away at high speed.

“…I asked Gail for help.”

The saintess nodded her head.

There was only one thing she had to do now.

Working miracles on earth now.

The saintess struggled with her words, knelt down and held her hands.

Muddy mud stains her clothes.

But she, a saint, didn’t pay any attention to that.

She

She had to control her heart in doing her prayers.

She had to get rid of any distractions.

However, it was very difficult for her to keep her composure under these circumstances.

I was afraid.

I was scared.

…It wasn’t because of the approaching monsters.

Not even for fear of losing her life.

…I’m afraid I won’t see Berg again. She was so afraid of it.

The saintess recalled Berg in her mind.

“Give me courage, Bell…”

She whispers.

Thinking of him… I felt my heart harden.

Within seconds, her white light spread out from her center.

Hmm, so many harem novels, and yet, apart from this one, none seems to illustrate the issues with polygamy. This is really well done on the author’s part.

  5. I like both Arwin and Ner but they just are too toxic when they get together lol

I hope Berg comes to help too!

  6. rob z rob z says:

Berg in this chapter really reminded me of Rand al’ Thor from the Wheel of Time – remembering and reciting the names of all those who died under his leadership, the emotional responses when discussing with Gail, even the comment about death reminded me of “detah is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain.”
