Love Letter From The Future chapter 357

5. Bread and Dagger (55)

What kind of existence are elves to mankind?

He was an earthly demon and an enemy of the Empire. Fallen fairies who slaughter good and innocent subjects and plunder their resources.

The race that was once called the servants of bows and spirits has gone downhill like this.

In the eyes of mankind, elves were closer to beasts than sub-species. It meant that it was nothing more than an object to be dealt with, managed, and avoided.

Indeed, no one thought that elves were enemies that could threaten the existence of mankind.

The power difference between humans and elves was clear.

Even if the elves could commit small raids, they had to run away when a full-scale battle began. That strong belief was sustaining the pride of mankind.

However, this is the story of ‘humanity’ to the end.

At this point, I remembered a question I hadn’t asked before.

So what about elves?

What kind of existence is humanity to elves?

The answer to that question was already in front of me.

heavy silence.

It felt like the air was pressing on my lungs. The faces of everyone in the party, except for me, were hardened. And what about those bleached faces?

It was comparable to the snow that covered the snowfield.

To the elves, humanity was fear itself.

Those who could erase their existence from the world at any time would be more appropriate to describe them as living natural disasters.

Because the elves had no means to resist humanity.

In particular, the village I was staying in was small. With an armed force, suppression was simple.

It was a fact that even I noticed right away.

There was no way the parties were unaware of this. Cold sweat formed on the elves’ foreheads.

For a while, there was stillness like a sheet of thin ice.

Old Pope kept a heavy silence, and the rest waited for the advice of the experienced old man. Since I wasn’t an elf in the first place, I decided to remain silent.

It was time to denounce humanity.

There was no reason for me to spoil the atmosphere. Old Pope also didn’t seem to want to quarrel with me.

A low voice escaped from his mouth.

“… … It’s been a while since you left.”

Those were the words he threw as he ran his fingers through his narrow eyes.

He was a man who had been hunting for hundreds of years. His assurances were reliable.

I heard someone in the party gulping dry saliva and swallowing.

Old Pope let out a long sigh.

“You don’t need to be too scared. A horse is only a day’s drive away, and a skilled guide is needed to search the entire radius… Again, it will take time. Above all else, this area is a hunting ground.”

“Can the snow leopard stop them?”

“I can only hope to block it as much as possible. As you know, snow leopards have a habit of calling their companions when their territory is invaded.”

To be precise, it was not a snow leopard, but a demon beast.

Contaminated demons infect creatures of the same species. In the process, there was a time when animals that used to live alone lived in groups, as if a colony consciousness was born.

Even if it wasn’t, he would call his comrades when he was in danger. I wondered if the snow leopard demon also belonged to this category.

At Pope’s words, Isha and Avian let out a sigh of relief.

It was important that there was still room to prepare.

Rather than being attacked without knowing anything, it was better to have time to return to the village and share opinions. Then the answer would come out.

Will they migrate as a group or protect the village even if they die?

Old Pope was already grunting with his brows narrowed. It was the same with Isha.

It was worth it.

Avian and I had only recently become residents, but it wasn’t just the two of us. The weight of the years spent in the village would not be so light.

But what can I do?

The only way to survive was to run away.

It was a truth that would not change whether they had lived in the village for decades or hundreds of years. It was impossible to deal with the army with only a dozen or so villagers at most.

The only hope was that there were not many footprints left in the camp.

I asked just in case.

“Can’t you go after it like this and cut off the buds of danger in advance?”

It was an opinion that seemed cruel at first glance.

Old Pope and Isha’s eyes were blankly directed at me. As if he didn’t know that he was going to talk about getting rid of his own people.

Even after I said it, oh, I wanted to.

The owner of the footprints has not yet been identified. What if the owner is Yurdina-kun?

Now I was asking if it was okay to kill my ally.

But it was my friend.

Feigning a calm voice, I asked again.

“Anyway, there are many witches around here. I don’t think there will be an additional search just because it went missing in the forest… … .”

“No.”

Old Pope answered that and shook his head.

As my eyes widened toward him, he gave me an explanation.

“As you said, there are too many snow marks here. And after the intruders got on their nerves in the middle of it… Do you know what that means?”

“You must be looking for something to vent your anger on.”

“Or maybe he’s already finished venting his anger and is looking for food.”

A deep sigh escaped from old Pope’s mouth.

“You have to withdraw. It has become too dangerous.”

I silently nodded.

In this case, it was better to follow the advice of experienced hunters. Avian also shuddered at the sound of ‘snow leopard’ and immediately agreed.

Rather, it was Isha who presented the opposite opinion.

“Ha, but the Pope inspiration!”

At the sound of that desperate voice, the movement of the party that was turning their steps stopped.

With inspiration from Pope, our eyes turned to Isha. Isha hesitated for a moment at the sudden gaze, but soon after, she raised her voice again.

It was a desperate appeal.

“It’s been a while since we ran out of food… At this rate, the young elves will starve first. Even if there are humans around. Then it will be difficult to go hunting!”

“Isha… … .”

Old Pope bit his lip and showed a look of hesitation.

However, time makes us realize the virtue of temperance.

The judgment of the old man who has lived for hundreds of years has always been correct.

“No, if we die right away, there will be no elves to hunt next. We have no choice but to survive on wooden porridge.”

“but… … .”

“Isha.”

In the end, Isha couldn’t break old man Pope’s will.

He just bowed his head with a sad expression on his face. It was a sign of victory.

Leaving this behind, old Pope took another step. His last request was:

“Be careful not to leave any traces as much as possible. Don’t give the humans a clue.”

It was still a tone of faint fear.

Following old man Pope, who led the way, we began our retreat. While trying as hard as possible to leave no trace.

Of course, it wasn’t that there was no conversation between us at all.

I threw a joke at Isha, who looked depressed.

It was for some consolation.

“Isha, can’t you release it soon? If a snow leopard attacks you, it’s dangerous.”

It was half serious and half joking.

Anyway, if I wanted to, I could throw off this restraint as much as I wanted. It was just that he didn’t do it to gain the trust of the elves.

Isha didn’t even know what I was thinking and gave me an angry answer.

“no way!”

The form of glaring at me with a tingle was quite ferocious.

Even though I was resentful, it was a lower-class attitude.

Whether the hostility towards humans was directed at me. I just shrugged.

“Then who knows you’ll join the human side?! I’ll never let you go. So don’t even dream about it!”

It was a simple resentment.

I gladly decided to become a sacrifice. Perhaps because of that, it was because Isha felt a bit relieved.

You have to be angry anyway, so you can’t harm me.

I just had a unfair point and spit out the words of protest.

“No, didn’t you just hear? I’m on the side of the elves. That’s why I even came up with an opinion to deal with my own people…”

“Don’t do that.”

It was old Pope’s advice.

Isha and I, who had been whispering, looked at him at once. But he didn’t even show a sign of looking back.

Silently making my way through the snowfield, I just said it again.

“You’re a human. You can’t just talk about killing your own people… You’ll regret it someday. They say you’re still on the side of the elves, but I don’t know.”

And the snoring that followed.

In the cracks of the language, I felt a worn-out piece of glass.

It was a fragment of sorrow that had dug so deep that it might now be a wound.

“……How long can I hold out?”

After that, the forest fell into silence again.

Isha and I made eye contact, shook our heads, and took another step.

It wasn’t a day or two for old Pope to say something incomprehensible.

But the silence did not last long.

When I heard the growl, my body stood still.

Isha asked with a slight frown.

“What are you doing? Don’t go quickly.”

No answer was needed.

It wasn’t long before old Pope’s steps stopped. Next was Avian, and last was Isha.

Suddenly, the sound of the animal scratching its neck was heard.

It was the billboards.

Blue eyes flickered through the shadows of the trees. It seems to run without making a noise and surround the prey.

Avian’s face darkened again.

She was particularly afraid of snow leopards. There was no way I wouldn’t freeze after seeing dozens of snow leopards.

Old Pope cried out like a madman.

“Everyone run away!”

The sound of a runner echoed across the snowfield.

Actually, I had no intention of running away, but Isha was desperately pulling, so I decided to match it to that rhythm first.

The midday chase began.

The sound of the wind echoed every time my feet dug deep into the snow and moss. It was the sound of chasing snow leopards.

No matter how fast a two-legged beast was, it could not overwhelm a four-legged beast.

It wasn’t long before the first scream rang out.

“Kyaaak!”

It was Isha.

It was because I was late to drag me with my hands tied.

The snow leopards could not stand the gap and rushed at it. The first to respond was old Pope.

“Isha!”

Old Pope gritted his teeth and muttered an incantation. Then, a sudden gale blew, and tree roots sprang up and wrapped themselves around Isha.

Avian was already in a state of panic.

She was shaking her head on the ground. I didn’t even know why I was so afraid of snow leopards.

I spoke from the roots of a tree just before the snow leopards attacked old Pope.

“Can I release it now?”

“What, what…?”

Isha stuttered and asked. Meanwhile, screams could be heard from outside.

There is no time.

So I asked again with a lot of strength on my forearm.

“Never loosen this restraint.”

When I asked while raising my wrist, Isha cried out in tears.

“Asshole, is it time to pay attention to that?! Jump out now!”

Pak, do.

Tree trunks scattered and Isha’s eyes widened. As if I had waited, I immediately put my hand on my waist.

There are three snow leopards aiming for Pope inspiration.

it was suitable

White beams of light pierced the air and shot out.

A silver trail drawn on the drawing paper of the stopped time, at the end of which bright red blood gushed out.

It was the result of the bone pain of one snow leopard that had attacked old man Pope.

And another paint that explodes while saying, “Pak,” and its trajectory changes.

Only then did the remaining snow leopard slowly move its blue pupils.

The blue blade reflected in those eyes.

Puck, the hatchet was stuck between the eyebrows, and the eyes popped out.

It was because I couldn’t overcome the pressure. The result was, of course, instant death.

Just one second, less than that. It was the time needed until the three snow leopards were sorted out.

Silence fell.

Even the snow leopards, which were burning with murderous intent, did not move at all. He just lowers his posture and gazes at one spot with frozen eyes.

I was at the center of it.

With a sigh, I pushed through the tree trunks and my body faced the cold air.

Whoa, the exhaled breath scattered in pure white. It was truly a battle in a long time.

And when I raised my hand, the hatchet came back with a pop.

Blood and brains were dripping from the ax blade. The slimy liquid flowed and wet my hands, but I didn’t care.

I’ll have to ask for a while anyway.

I smiled bitterly.

“Fifteen dogs…”

The first monster I faced was a wolf.

Did you catch ten then?

“Not bad.”

If so, I will catch five more than that today.

Faced with my menacing eyes, the monsters took a step backwards. Aww, I heard a cry for help.

Even so, my body didn’t even stir.

I’m going hunting today.

It was the first decision I made for an elf in my life.

Well…at least the status quo right now is the MC learning that humanity isnt the only one in the shitters right now. The same way Humanity views Demons with fear, the Elves view Humanity as Demons.
Hope the end of the arc includes the first step of reconciliation…though thats pretty difficult considering the fact that humans pretty much did the WW2 Germany move of purifying them with genocide.
